Lovely. Legendary. Lena.

                                         1917 —  2010

Cotton Club dancer, Grammy award winning singer, Tony and Emmy award nominated actress.--Lena Horne did it all, while looking incredibly elegant. She was the first African American performer to sign with  Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the most prestigious studio in the world at the time. She made her film debut with MGM in Panama Hattie. She also appeared in the movies, Stormy Weather, Zeigfield Follies, Broadway Rhythm and Cabin in the Sky. (Her rendition of Stormy Weather was always a memorable one for me.) Ms. Horne danced and sang at the famous Cotton Club when she was 16 years old. It was then that she met Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington who became her friends. Many of the younger generation will know Lena from playing the good witch, Glinda in the Wiz starring Michael Jackson. She also made appearances in the Flip Wilson Show, Cosby, Sesame Street and the Muppet Show. Ms. Horne had two children, Gail Lumet Buckley and Terry Jones. She will be incredibly missed.
